On its free Standard plan, Donorbox takes a 2.95% platform fee plus payment processing (2.2% + $0.30 per US card donation at Stripe's nonprofit rate) — about $5.45 of a $100 card donation, so your nonprofit keeps $94.55, unless the donor ticks "cover fees" at checkout, in which case you receive the full $100.
Worked examples (Standard plan, US rates)
| Donation | Platform fee (2.95%) | Processing | Total fees | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $100 by card | $2.95 | $2.50 (2.2% + $0.30) | $5.45 | $94.55 |
| $1,000 by card | $29.50 | $22.30 (2.2% + $0.30) | $51.80 | $948.20 |
| $100 by bank (ACH) | $2.95 | $0.80 (0.8%) | $3.75 | $96.25 |
| $1,000 by bank (ACH) | $29.50 | $5.00 (0.8%, capped at $5) | $34.50 | $965.50 |
| Any amount, donor covers fees | $0 to you | $0 to you | $0 | 100% |
The three things that change the answer
- Plan. Standard is free with a 2.95% platform fee. Pro ($150/month) drops it to 1.75% — worth it above roughly $150k/yr of donation volume, where the 1.2-point saving exceeds the $1,800/yr subscription.
- Payment method. Stripe nonprofit card rate is 2.2% + $0.30; ACH is 0.8% capped at $5 (much cheaper for large gifts); PayPal processes at 1.99% + $0.49 (non-AmEx).
- Donor-covers-fees. Donorbox lets donors "cover all the fees — so you get the full amount of every donation." Every donor who accepts moves that gift's cost from your budget to theirs.
